One of the most frequently asked questions by parents and adults who want to start playing piano is: how long do piano lessons actually last?
The short answer is: it varies greatly by teacher and by school. The longer answer is more important, because the duration of a piano lesson has a direct influence on progress, motivation, and the learning process..
In this article, we explain what is common in practice and why we at Studio MusicalMente consciously make different choices, especially for beginners.
What is the average duration of a piano lesson?
In many music schools, piano lessons last on average:
- 30 minutes per week, or
- 30 minutes every two weeks
This seems practical and affordable, but for beginners, it is often not enough to make real progress.
Why many teachers choose short lessons
Short piano lessons are often offered because they:
- are easy to schedule
- appear to be lower priced
- fit better into busy schedules
However, in practice, we see clear limitations, especially in the initial phase.
The problem with 30-minute piano lessons
In a 30-minute lesson, the following generally happens:
- the student sits down
- plays one song
- receives brief instructions
- and the lesson is over
There is little to no time for technique, posture, rhythm, note reading, and listening. The student plays but does not receive a full musical foundation.
Why beginners need more guidance
A beginner typically plays at home for about one hour a week (if that). With only a 30-minute lesson, it is almost impossible to:
- correct mistakes properly
- answer questions calmly
- make visible progress during the lesson
This often causes stress: for both the student and the teacher. The short lesson creates pressure, whereas music requires calm and focus.
Our vision at Studio MusicalMente
Bij At Studio MusicalMente we work differently.
For beginners, we work with sessions of at least 60 minutes. Not because it has to be longer, but because learning takes time.
A beginner does not just learn to play a song with us, but:
- understands what they are doing
- learns to listen
- builds technique
- develops musical confidence
What happens in a one-hour piano lesson?
In a 60-minute lesson, there is room for:
- warm-up and technique
- working on several short components
- playing together with the teacher
- immediate feedback
- small successes during the lesson
The student goes home with clarity, motivation, and a sense that progress is achievable.
And what about frequency?
Besides duration, regularity is also important. A lesson every two weeks is usually insufficient for beginners. The gap between lessons is too large to make good progress.
That is why we work with:
- regular weekly lessons
- a clear structure
- personal follow-up
Conclusion
On average, piano lessons often last 30 minutes. For beginners, we believe that this is not enough to achieve quick and relaxed progress.
At Studio MusicalMente, we consciously choose longer, substantive lessons. Because learning takes time. And because music is more than playing one song.
Who am I?
I am Luca Ridolfo and I founded Studio MusicalMente in The Hague in 2018. I have been driven by music from a young age. But I was not a Musical Prodigy. I greatly enjoyed making music and had a drive to learn more about it. My music teachers always supported and encouraged me to continue.
And indeed, I continued on to complete a music education at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. And even now, I never stop learning.
I firmly believe that everyone can improve their musicality and that this should not be reserved for children only. That is why I decided to open a music school for adults in The Hague.
I believe that learning creative hobbies with experienced role models is one of the best ways to develop new skills and learn more about yourself.
